The Dossier

Twenty-odd seconds of what the day looks like from the inside. We have left out the part that would ruin it, which is, admittedly, most of it.

The storyline

How The Day Unfolds

Six hours of driving, one envelope, and no briefing beforehand. That last part is not an oversight.

  1. A red Ferrari parked on an empty forecourt, the Dubai skyline and the Burj Khalifa behind it at first light
    07:40
    01

    07:40 · Arrival

You do not park. Somebody parks for you.

Your name is on a list you never signed, the car is already warm, and the person walking toward you knows how you take your coffee. You have done nothing yet and you are already behind.

  2. A concierge pointing at a tablet on a marble desk, a code on the screen and no paperwork in sight
    08:05
    02

    08:05 · The Welcome

    Check-in, minus the checking in.

A key, a route card, and precisely zero paperwork. No forms, no deposit theatre, no clipboard with your surname spelled optimistically. The handover lasts about one espresso.

  3. A red Ferrari at speed on a coast road, the Dubai skyline low on the water behind it
    09:20
    03

    09:20 · Departure

The first thirty minutes are yours. Spend them badly.

Past the last roundabout the city stops arguing and the road opens up. Mirrors, seat, a long beat of silence, throttle. Nothing is asked of you yet.

  4. An unmarked black envelope in the open glovebox of a car
    11:15
    04

    11:15 · The Package

Then the envelope stops being an envelope.

A location you were not expecting. A phrase that will not make sense for two hours. A window of time that looks generous right up until you check the map. The radio will not be answering questions.

Debrief

Extraction

You come back with a slightly ridiculous grin, a folder you have become oddly attached to, and a group chat that will not recover for a fortnight. The car goes back the way it came. Somebody else parks it, naturally.

That is one of five. There are four more, and we have said too much already.
